For the most part that has included a path of assimilation for students at the earliest possible point. In my school we have students who are placed in special classes when they first arrive. However, they are mainstreamed with support for many classes. On a secondary level such as the one in which I work, this is necessary because of the inability to hire a teacher who can teach all subjects at a secondary level. Students who I have had dealings with are eager to leave the special classes and be independent in the regular setting. It is clear that students do not feel their cultural differences are to be embraced.

The school and district need to review this program to see if they can determine why students are so reluctant to remain in these classes. Personally, I can see a few reasons. One being the adolescent need to fit in.

Also, these classes are not part of the mainstream school. They are often assigned to portable buildings and there is a sense that these classes are less desirable. Lastly, in reviewing the curriculum, the level of works seems much lower than what mainstream students are receiving.

Therefore, students feel that they have been placed in a class that is well below their academic capabilities.
